WHIZ COMICS #35 Facsimile Edition
A prime wartime issue from early in WWII, with Spy Smasher and CM sharing the title on the great cross-over cover. CM meets the mythological Three Fates, the three witches of many a story. A sailing ship from 1492 suddenly turns up in the present day. Spy Smasher goes after Nazi saboteurs. Lance O'Cassey meets the Amazons. Ibis the Invincible meets the Leopard Man. Plus more in a great 64-page issue. Billy Batson, by uttering the magical word Shazam!, turns into the powerful Captain Marvel, using his remarkable abilities to battle evil and uphold justice. The Golden Arrow story is attributed to Al Carreno. Emil Gershwin is an excellent artist who's unfortunately mostly forgotten now. But he did excellent work for DC when he took over art on Starman in Adventure Comicsย after Simon & Kirby ended their run. And here he does a fine cover very much in the style of Mac Raboy, while also emulating C.C. Beck on Captain Marvel's face! Lance O'Casey is by the also-excellent Harry Anderson.ย He drew the earliest Nyoka the Jungle Girl issues and went on to work for Stan Lee doing some iconic pre-code horror work. All in all, an outstanding early issue. Now in a perfect-bound format with a square spine.
