Vargas is the most famous of all American pin-up artists. Individual chapters cover each decade of Vargas's career, beginning in the 1920s, then the 30s, 40s, and very early 50s. Vargas Girls boosted the morale of our fighting men during WWII. There are eleven Esquire girls, along with other unusual and less-seen works featuring elegant nudes, Follies beauties, etc. This is a nice overview of his career, spanning 16 pages, with more rare work and photos. The late Alberto Vargas, born Joaquin Alberto Vargas y Chavez in Peru's second largest city, Arequipa, is still famous for his surreal portraits of women. If he were alive today, though, he would no doubt argue that he always painted women realistically, the way he actually saw them. He once said that his dream was to paint a Vargas Girl: "One day I will paint a Vargas Girl so beautiful, so perfect, so typical of the American Girl, that I shall be able to show it to people anywhere in the world, without any signature on it, and they'll say: 'That's a Vargas Girl!". Out of Print. Condition: Very Good Minus. Cover and edge wear. Back cover is missing. Creases to top front cover.
