RICHARD REDGRAVE

Artist, designer, writer, educator, Richard Redgrave (1804-1888) was highly regarded in his own era but has almost been forgotten in the years since then. This lavishly illustrated book, published on the centenary of Redgrave's death, focuses attention once again on this remarkable Victorian figure, known for his early paintings of women, the poor and the oppressed, images that were powerful evocations of the human dilemma, such as "The Emigrant's Last Sight of Home." Redgrave was also co-author of A Century of British Painters and played a vital part in creating interest in the design and industry that led to the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the foundation of the South Kensington Museums. As a designer, an art administrator who set up over one hundred schools of art throughout England, and an art historian, his energies were formidable. He continued to paint for sixty years, turning increasingly to the landscape surrounding his beloved home in Surrey. In his later years he was appointed Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures. This is a catalog of the commemorative exhibition of Redgrave's works held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven.
