The Art of Mexican Calendars The Legend of the Images. The art of the Mexican calendars of the 20th century in the finery of Mexico. In the 20th century, Mexico embarked upon an enormous undertaking, inherited from its independence: the responsibility of constituting itself as a nation with a frank identity. La Suave Patria sang its glories in color and an explosive plurality of forms, which artists and workers, the citizens of post-revolutionary Mexico, were quick to embrace. Enterprise, craft, taste, choice, aesthetic, and discourse converged in production dynamics, in a loyal commitment to a project of modernity and progress. Graphic art, in all its manifestations, was never alien to such an apologia.
Patriotic images conquered the new gaze of Mexican identity: the Vasconcelos and López Velarde ink on paper, walls, legend, and consciousness. At a time of nationalist concerns, linked to post-war Europe, the strong visual influence of Hollywood, and the American dream, the subjects result from the communion of Mexico with the world: an indigenous Olympus, celestial mysticism, a cry of war, homeland and people, eroticism and vanity, children-men of tomorrow-today, love, bullfights, collective songbook, immortal idyll, screen, and the pilgrimage of images.Don Santiago Galas founded his graphic arts company at the dawn of the 20th century. He fulfilled the role -or the ink- of generating, as we can understand it today, a veritable encyclopedia of images. Under the premise that the customer gets what is painted, this phenomenon occurred. There were images that, like El idilio, became immortal.
The collection, restored and preserved, was ready to travel and be exhibited during 1999 in the United States, based on the research initiated and coordinated by Alfonso Morales, with the support of the Rockefeller scholarship, and at the Fine Arts Center Museum in Chicago on the occasion of a series of exhibitions held at the Mexican Museum of San Francisco and The Latino Museum of Los Angeles. Text is in Spanish. Out of Print. Condition: Fine Plus. One small scratch on the front cover.
